If you use an ad-blocker on your computer, this is the #1 culprit. YouTube often "injects" ads into the Shorts queue that the ad-blocker removes.
The Glitch: When you click Video #5, YouTube thinks it's playing Video #5, but because the ad-blocker hid two ads, you're actually clicking what looks like Video #3. The player gets confused and jumps to where it "thinks" you should be.
The Fix: Try right-clicking the Short and selecting "Open in new tab." This usually forces the specific video to load correctly without the queue jumping.
On the app, the "next video" command is triggered by a vertical swipe. If your finger moves even slightly upward when you tap to pause or unmute, the app registers a "swipe up" and skips to the next Short.
The Fix: Try tapping closer to the center of the screen or using a very "staccato" tap.
There is a known bug where clicking a Short from the "Home" or "Subscribed" feed doesn't open the one you clicked, but rather the first one in the "Shorts Shelf" list.
The Fix: If it skips, try swiping back up (downward motion) immediately. Often, the video you actually wanted is sitting right above the one it jumped to
